The New York Mets wasted no time taking a jab at Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels after securing a 4-1 win in the series opener against the Nationals at Citi Field on Friday night.
The jab came amid the ongoing discussion about Daniels’ cease-and-desist letter to his alma mater, LSU, over sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett wearing his No. 5 Tigers jersey.
Daniels wore the famed jersey for two seasons with the Tigers football team and, in 2023, became only the third Heisman Trophy recipient in the program’s history, further cementing his name and jersey number among the program’s greats.

Daniels was the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He earned a Pro Bowl nod in his rookie season and also won the Offensive Rookie of the Year honor. However, LSU has not officially retired the jersey, and the number was worn by an active player for the first time since Daniels last wore it in the 2023 campaign.
Back on the diamond, New York won the series opener on the back end of solo home runs from Francisco Lindor and Jared Young, alongside RBIs from Bo Bichette and Carson Benge. Furthermore, it was a bullpen game for the home side, and all five pitchers put in an amazing effort from the mound to seal the win.
Despite the Win, the Mets Continue to Struggle in 2026Despite being 7-3 in their last ten games, New York is having a disappointing campaign at both ends of the field. Currently, they sit at the bottom of the NL East with a 54-69 record, 15 games short of the .500 mark and a whopping 19.5 games behind divisional leaders, the Atlanta Braves.
The ball club appears to be in no position to secure a playoff berth this season, and disappointed fans have begun looking ahead to next season in hopes of a major turnaround from the ongoing slump. After the three-game series against the Nationals, the Mets will conclude their six-game homestand by hosting the Padres starting Monday.
