New York Giants releasing WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

The New York Giants are releasing veteran wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move comes as a corresponding roster adjustment to the team’s signing of free-agent running back Najee Harris.

Harris agreed to a one-year contract after visiting the facility and working out for the team on Monday. The 28-year-old is returning from a torn Achilles tendon suffered early last season with the Los Angeles Chargers. He previously spent four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, posting four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons and earning a Pro Bowl nod after 2021.

Head coach John Harbaugh noted that Harris is not yet fully recovered or in football shape, describing any addition as a process, but praised the veteran’s size, experience, and potential to contribute once ready. Harris joins a backfield that includes Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary.

Smith-Schuster signed a one-year deal with the Giants in early June following a workout, joining a group of veteran wideouts that also included Odell Beckham Jr. and Braxton Berrios.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers and Kansas City Chiefs receiver had been dealing with a knee injury throughout the summer and training camp. The issue limited his availability and caused him to fall behind the other wide receivers competing for roster spots. He was not present at Monday's practice and never regained enough health to make a serious push for a role on the final roster.

The release clears a spot for Harris while reflecting the ongoing adjustments as the Giants finalize their 53-man roster ahead of the regular season.
