Byron Buxton appears to be trying to finish the 2026 season in discomfort, but the hip injury that’s ailed him could still land him on the injured list and require offseason surgery.
Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll said Friday that Buxton remains day-to-day, but his injury, which he aggravated in Tuesday’s game in Sacramento, could eventually force the All-Star center fielder back on the injured list and possibly under the knife.
“We need to see how he comes in as he gets through a little bit more activity today,” Zoll said Friday. “We’re going to see if we can get him through this next stretch and back on the field one more time. But really just day-to-day at this point.”
According to Darren Wolfson, Zoll said offseason hip surgery is “definitely a potential option.”
Buxton was placed on the 10-day injured list on July 7 with a right hip strain/impingement, and again on July 29 because of the same issue. He returned Aug. 13 and hit just .179 with a .535 OPS in 11 games before the latest setback.
More Twins injury updatesJoe Ryan (glute) threw live batting practice on Thursday. He’ll throw a bullpen session on Sunday, and if that goes well, he’ll be sent on a minor league rehab assignment early next week.
Kendry Rojas (oblique) is scheduled for a couple of bullpen sessions, with the first coming late next week. Zoll believes he could return to the Twins or Triple-A St. Paul in mid-September.
Austin Martin (hamstring) has been running. He could start a rehab assignment next week or the following week.
Mick Abel (elbow) is playing catch at 60 feet.
Pablo Lopez (elbow) is throwing at 45 feet three times a week.
Both Abel and Lopez are expected back next season.
