We are just days away from the start of the regular season the the Pittsburgh Steelers and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. continue to struggle to come to terms on a contract extension. But it might be even worse than that. According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, the Steelers haven't even bothered to make a contract offer to Porter Jr. as of yet.
According to Garafolo, the team wants to see Porter Jr. off the PUP list and on the field before they are willing to give him an offer. Porter Jr. has been dealing with what is considered a back injury, forcing him to miss all of training camp, but we've always felt like this was just a ploy to cover his holdout. But now there seems to be an ultimatum by the team for Porter Jr. to get on the field if he wants there to be any negotiations at all.
How is it possible that it’s the end of August and the Steelers still haven’t made a contract offer to Joey Porter Jr. That’s insane. pic.twitter.com/IH7jv8rcUS
— Andrew Fillipponi (@ThePoniExpress) August 25, 2026Given how slighted Porter Jr. was during the NFL Draft when he felt like he slid in to the No. 32 overall pick, we can definitely see him sitting out the regular season and betting on himself. We saw how wrong this can go when former Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell tried this tactic but it could force the team to trade Porter Jr. at some point.
