The Cleveland Browns may have thought announcing Deshaun Watson as the starter would be the end of the conversation around their quarterback room. That, however, is clearly not the case.
One name that got lost in the shuffle between Shedeur Sanders and Watson during training camp is Dillon Gabriel, whose spot on the depth chart is still up in the air.
With the roster cut deadline right around the corner, one Cleveland insider sees a potential landing spot for Gabriel if his future does not lie with the Browns.
Browns Insider Floats Dillon Gabriel Trade DestinationBrowns insider Tony Grossi took to social media to speak about Gabriel’s situation. In his post, he mentioned a potential trade partner for the young quarterback. This proposed solution would keep the former Oregon Ducks star in the AFC.
“I listed Jacksonville as a potential trade partner for Dillon Gabriel. Instead, they traded with Miami for Quinn Ewers. Now Miami needs a backup to Malik Willis. AB, you’re up,” Grossi posted on social media on Saturday.
As his post points out, the Jacksonville Jaguars did acquire Quinn Ewers in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. Ewers lost the starting quarterback job to Malik Willis. As a result, he was shipped to the Jaguars, where he will back up Trevor Lawrence.
As things currently stand, the Dolphins don’t have a concrete backup behind Willis. 2025 draft pick Cam Miller is currently slated as the second option under center. Behind him, rookie Mark Gronowski is pencilled in as the third quarterback.

Gabriel would give the Dolphins a backup quarterback with some starting experience in the NFL. He was under center for 10 games in 2025 as the Browns tried to navigate a difficult season. He tossed seven touchdowns and two interceptions while throwing for 937 yards.
Miami, like Cleveland, is not expected to compete in 2026. This could be a good spot for Gabriel to land on his feet. It would be a low-pressure environment where he could develop as a player.
He may not start many games, but it could be more beneficial than his current situation in Cleveland.
The Browns have to sort through their roster before any decision is made. For now, though, it seems as if Gabriel’s future with Cleveland is very much in doubt.
