San Francisco 49ers defensive standout Nick Bosa has marked a significant milestone in his recovery journey, participating fully in practice for the first time since suffering a torn ACL in his right knee during Week 3 of the 2025 NFL season. This pivotal practice took place on Wednesday as the 49ers gear up for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on September 10 in Melbourne, Australia.

Bosa, who was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year prior to his injury, expressed optimism about his performance during the session, stating, "I felt great," and describing the experience as "very encouraging." His return to full practice is a crucial step in his rehabilitation process and raises hopes for his availability in the upcoming game.

While Bosa refrained from making any guarantees about playing against the Rams, his progress during practice has certainly bolstered his confidence. He remarked, "After today, yeah, that was pretty good," when asked about the possibility of taking the field in the season opener. This statement reflects his growing assurance as he continues to recover.

The road to recovery has not been without its challenges for Bosa. He initially avoided starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list, allowing him to engage in individual drills early on. However, his comeback hit a snag when he experienced discomfort around his patellar tendon, prompting him to reassess his training intensity. Bosa acknowledged that he may have accelerated his return to football activities too quickly, stating, "It was a long road. There’s some stuff I dealt with, with that patella tendon, and then I kind of ramped it a little too fast with the football stuff." This caution has been essential in ensuring he builds strength and confidence before rejoining full-speed team drills.

Wednesday’s practice provided a significant indication that Bosa is ready to advance to the next phase of his recovery. He noted, "Once you get into team, there’s no reservations, there’s no compensation … like there’s no governor," highlighting the importance of being fully engaged in team activities without hesitation. His presence on the field could not come at a more critical time for the 49ers, who struggled to generate pressure on opposing quarterbacks last season, finishing at the bottom of the league with just 20 sacks.

A fully healthy Bosa would dramatically enhance the 49ers' defensive capabilities, transforming the outlook of their defensive front. The primary concern now is whether he can maintain this positive trajectory without facing further setbacks. Should Wednesday's practice be any indication, Bosa is on the verge of making a significant impact as the 49ers prepare for their season opener.
