The Jacksonville Jaguars are sending a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for quarterback Quinn Ewers, with the teams also swapping Day 3 selections in that draft. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported the trade earlier in the day.
Trevor Lawrence is coming off a season with a franchise-record 38 total touchdowns and the third 4,000-yard passing year of his career, and Nick Mullens spent training camp confirming he was the backup. The only unsettled question in the room was which of two arms, Carter Bradley or undrafted rookie Joey Aguilar, would hold the practice squad spot.

Liam Coen’s staff answered it by trading for someone else, and Ewers arrives with three NFL starts and a rookie deal that runs through 2028.

He was used sparingly last season, attempting three passes and completing all three. Jacksonville has reason to care about the arm behind Lawrence regardless, since a season-ending injury in 2024 cost the quarterback most of that year. All of that holds through January. It becomes a live question next spring, and Ewers is now the only quarterback on the roster that the Jaguars control past 2026.

Miami took Ewers 231st overall in 2025, the last quarterback drafted that year, then handed him four appearances and three starts as a rookie once Tua Tagovailoa was pushed aside late in the season. He threw for 622 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
The Dolphins signed Malik Willis this offseason and installed him as the starter, leaving Ewers to compete with 2025 sixth-rounder Cam Miller and undrafted rookie Mark Gronowski for what was left of the room.
Ewers completed one of eight passes for 27 yards with an interception in the preseason opener against Washington, then injured his groin and sat out the Aug. 22 game against the Giants. Miami waived 12 players on Saturday. Ewers was the one they got something back for.
Most of what Jacksonville is buying happened in Austin. Ewers started three seasons at Texas, appeared in 37 games and completed 64.9 percent of his throws for 9,128 yards with 68 touchdowns and 24 interceptions, reaching consecutive College Football Playoff semifinals before entering the draft with a year of eligibility remaining.

Many drafts graded him as a Day 2 prospect. He lasted until the seventh round, and he said afterward that being the last quarterback taken gave him something to work with.
“It’s definitely a lot of motivation that comes with it, especially just being the last [quarterback] drafted. I still have the high expectations for myself, but just from the outside looking in, this is the first time in my life to not have that much expectation. There’s definitely motivation and fuel. A lot of it.” Ewers said.
Jacksonville opens the season with the same two quarterbacks it always planned on. Ewers is signed through 2028, two years longer than anyone else in the room.
