Newcastle United are set to sign Spanish midfielder Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the 24-year-old is already in Newcastle to undergo a medical ahead of a £50 million move from Man City while both sides have exchanged paperwork.
The Magpies have agreed to pay an initial £47m, with a further £3m available in add-ons.
The Spaniard has also given the green light to Newcastle’s project, with the club prepared to make him an important player in their squad.
Newcastle are working on revamping their midfield after losing a couple of key players.
The Magpies have cashed in on Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes, and Gonzalez is expected to bolster Matthias Jaissle’s midfield.
The move could give Gonzalez the chance to revive his career after a difficult spell in Manchester.
He joined the Premier League champions from Porto for £50m in February 2025, coming in to cover for Rodri, who was dealing with a long-term injury.
Gonzalez was given a chance to prove himself in the second half of the 2024/25 season, but his playing time dropped after Rodri returned to full fitness.
He made 41 appearances last season and scored twice. He also won 55% of his duels and averaged 1.7 tackles, 3.6 clearances, and 1.8 clearances per 90 minutes while creating one big chance.
Rodri’s exit was supposed to pave the way for Gonzalez to run the midfield, but Elliott Anderson’s £116m arrival from Nottingham Forest sealed his fate.
Gonzalez was an unused substitute in Man City’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth. He’s now one step away from joining Newcastle.
Newcastle were impressive in their Premier League curtain-raiser against Liverpool.
They came agonisingly close to clinching a 2-1 victory courtesy of goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock on either side of Cody Gakpo’s strike.
However, a last-gasp penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai helped Liverpool salvage a 2-2 draw.
