DULUTH, Minn. - The Augustana football team, ranked No. 13 in the nation, suffered a disappointing defeat in their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) opener, losing 30-23 to No. 24 Minnesota Duluth on Thursday night at James S. Malosky Stadium. This loss puts Augustana at 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC, while Minnesota Duluth improves to 1-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
Quarterback Gunnar Hensley had a notable performance, completing 24 of 41 passes for 319 yards, including one touchdown, but he also threw an interception. Running back Breylon Blount contributed significantly to the offense, rushing for 106 yards and scoring a touchdown. Additionally, Klayton Sattler was a key target for Hensley, making six receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown.
The Vikings' defense showcased their strength with four sacks and a pass breakup. Leading the defense, Wyatt Hamersma recorded a team-high 10 tackles, while Camron Maciejewski added eight tackles, including one sack. Kicker Jake Pecina also made his mark, scoring 11 points by successfully converting all three of his field goal attempts.

The Vikings' offense continued to push forward but faced a touchback on a punt. Minnesota Duluth capitalized on their next possession, scoring a touchdown to narrow the gap to 14-10.
In the closing moments of the first half, Augustana's offense moved quickly, with Blount and Hensley connecting on a 49-yard pass to set up a 43-yard field goal by Pecina, giving the Vikings a 17-10 halftime lead. Hensley ended the first half with 151 passing yards, while Blount had 95 rushing yards.
The second half began with the Bulldogs threatening, but a fumble recovery by Tyler Birn halted their momentum. The two teams exchanged scores, with Minnesota Duluth scoring a touchdown to pull within one point at 17-16. Augustana responded with a 24-yard field goal from Pecina, extending their lead to 20-16.
However, the Bulldogs quickly answered with a touchdown, taking a 22-20 lead after a blocked extra point. Hensley led the Vikings on a drive that resulted in another field goal from Pecina, reclaiming the lead at 23-22 with just over three minutes left in the game.
Following a lightning delay that lasted nearly two hours, Minnesota Duluth capitalized on the break, scoring a touchdown to secure the victory. The Vikings' final drive ended with an incompletion in the end zone, sealing their fate.
Looking ahead, Augustana will return home to host Minot State on September 12 at 1 p.m. at Kirkeby-Over Stadium, aiming to bounce back from this tough loss and improve their standing in the NSIC.
