In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the North Platte Panthers secured a commanding 16-3 victory over the Bishop LeBlond Eagles in St. Joseph, Missouri. This win marks a continuation of North Platte's strong start to the season, as they aim to build on their early success and avoid the midseason slump that plagued them last year, when they began with a similar 5-0 record but struggled later on.
"Our motto this year is to raise the standard," said sophomore pitcher Charlie Hinton, reflecting the team's commitment to continuous improvement. Hinton emphasized the importance of getting better with each game, a mindset that seems to be paying off as the Panthers look to maintain their momentum.
Bishop LeBlond, on the other hand, is still in the process of developing its pitching staff. Freshman Kat Rasmussen took the mound for the Eagles, facing a challenging game as she stepped into this pivotal role for the first time in her career. Despite the loss, Rasmussen showed resilience, throwing over 150 pitches and gaining valuable experience that will aid her development as the season progresses.
Hinton, for North Platte, showcased her talent on the mound, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing only one earned run while striking out seven batters. Her fastball proved to be a significant weapon, and she is also working on developing a changeup that, when executed well, has the potential to disrupt hitters' timing. "I love going up and pitching and just throwing my best," Hinton expressed, highlighting her enjoyment of the game and the support of her teammates on defense.
Relief pitcher Aria Stancil took over for Hinton, demonstrating a contrasting pitching style that further complicated matters for the Eagles. Stancil's unique approach, characterized by an unorthodox windup and a focus on movement rather than sheer power, allowed her to effectively shut down Bishop LeBlond for an inning and a third.
Offensively, North Platte was a force to be reckoned with, as six players contributed to the hit column, with four of them recording multiple hits. Junior Francis Kossen led the charge, going 3 for 4 at the plate, including a double that nearly cleared the fence. Kossen emphasized the need for adaptability at the plate, stating, "You just have to adjust to your inside pitches."
For Bishop LeBlond, sophomore Brynna Miller stood out, going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Catcher Haven Wright contributed the lone RBI, while Rasmussen also found success offensively, reaching base safely in all her appearances with a hit and two walks.
Looking ahead, North Platte aims to continue their winning streak as they prepare to face St. Pius X following a brief Labor Day break. The Panthers recently edged out St. Pius in a close game, winning 3-2, and are eager to replicate that success. Hinton expressed her enthusiasm for the season, stating, "It’s super fun, one of my most fun seasons honestly. Everyone just vibes so well together, it’s fun." Meanwhile, Bishop LeBlond will seek to rebound in their next matchup against Cameron, hoping to secure a win before the upcoming break.
