Northwestern’s biggest trap game is not against a Big Ten heavyweight. It is not even against a Power Four opponent.
That is what makes Ball State so dangerous.
The Wildcats are accustomed to playing the underdog role in conference play, but this is a rare spot where David Braun’s squad will be expected to win. Surrounded by a demanding Big Ten slate, maintaining focus becomes the primary hurdle.
CBS Sports college football analyst Brad Crawford noted that Colorado received initial consideration as the Wildcats’ potential trap game, but the broader schedule layout makes Ball State far more treacherous.
“Colorado received consideration, but Northwestern has a rare Week 2 bye before hosting the Buffaloes,” Crawford wrote. “The more dangerous spot comes in October, when an uninspiring home game against Ball State is sandwiched between Big Ten matchups with Penn State and Michigan State.”
That calendar setup is the entire trap.

Penn State will command Northwestern’s full preparation on Oct. 2, while the Oct. 17 trip to Michigan State carries crucial conference implications. Ball State, sitting squarely in the middle on Oct. 10, could easily become the game the Wildcats assume they can navigate on cruise control.
That kind of complacency would be costly. The Cardinals finished 4-8 last season, but Crawford noted that head coach Mike Uremovich completely overhauled the roster with 34 transfers among 58 incoming players.
That level of roster turnover introduces an element of volatility—and volatility is dangerous against an unfocused favorite.

“Given Ball State’s struggles over the past decade, it would be easy for David Braun’s staff and players to devote more attention to the conference games surrounding this one,” Crawford wrote.
For Braun and the Wildcats, avoiding a nonconference letdown will require treating an October MAC opponent with the exact same urgency they bring to the Big Ten grind.
