While attention continued to center on his no-show in Boston earlier in the week, injured Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was spotted by fans gambling in the casino at Talking Stick Resort on Friday, Aug. 21, at the same time that his team was playing the Cincinnati Reds across town at Chase Field.
Multiple online accounts posted photos and videos of Marte at the casino, including one by @mrazsports on Instagram showing him sitting at a roulette table while the game was being shown there on television in the top of the sixth inning.
Asked about it after the game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo offered a partial defense of Marte’s whereabouts, saying injured players are not required to be present for games.
But when posed with a follow-up question about whether it was a bad look for Marte to be at the casino on this of all days, Lovullo was less vehement in his defense.
“Let me think about that answer,” Lovullo said.
Marte did not show up to Fenway Park in Boston for the Diamondbacks’ game against the Red Sox on Monday, Aug. 17. He did not communicate with the team that day or in subsequent days until finally offering an explanation for his disappearance during a three-hour meeting with club officials on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Friday marked the Diamondbacks’ first game since the meeting – and first home game since the incident – and nearly every question in Lovullo’s pregame session with reporters focused on Marte. Lovullo’s comments centered on being ready to “turn the page” from the saga.
After the game, Lovullo said injured players are expected to go through their rehab work at Salt River Fields, usually in the morning, after which they are “turned loose.”
“He’s free to do whatever he wants,” Lovullo said. “That’s how I look at it. As long as he wakes up tomorrow morning and posts and gets his work done at Salt River, which I am certain he will, that’s all that matters to me right now.”
