In a commanding display of skill and strategy, the Notre Dame-Green Pond Crusaders defeated the North Schuylkill Spartans 38-7 on Friday night at Ghosh Orthodontics Field at Spartan Stadium. The victory showcased the Crusaders' high-powered offense, which has been a hallmark of their season.
The game kicked off with a bang as Notre Dame senior Drew Boyd returned the opening kickoff for a stunning 95-yard touchdown. Boyd's impressive run set the tone for the evening, as he evaded defenders and pulled away from the Spartans' coverage team, leaving North Schuylkill reeling from the outset.
Following an unsuccessful drive by the Spartans, the Crusaders quickly extended their lead. Quarterback Tommy Murphy showcased his athleticism with a 45-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 14-0. Murphy continued to shine, adding another touchdown shortly thereafter with a 23-yard run that sliced through the North Schuylkill defense.
North Schuylkill's head coach Joe Tomtishen acknowledged the challenges his young team faced against such a formidable opponent. “We’re not good enough to dig that type of hole against a football team like that,” he stated post-game. Despite the setback, he expressed optimism about the team's development, noting their inexperience and potential for improvement.
While Notre Dame-Green Pond's offense thrived, averaging nearly nine yards per play, North Schuylkill struggled to find momentum. After a promising start that saw them gain 50 yards into Crusaders’ territory, the Spartans managed only three yards for the remainder of the first half. The Crusaders capitalized on this lack of offensive production, scoring again on a 4-yard touchdown pass from Murphy to Nyechay Lawless, bringing the score to 28-0.
A critical moment arrived when a bad snap on a North Schuylkill punt allowed Notre Dame-Green Pond to recover the ball at the Spartans' 13-yard line. Running back Jonathan Striba wasted no time, scoring on a two-play drive to extend the lead to 35-0 before halftime.
Despite the overwhelming score, Tomtishen emphasized the importance of maintaining team spirit and pride. “I learned that we’re still going to play with Spartan pride no matter what the score is,” he said. His halftime message encouraged the players to focus on correcting mistakes and to aim for a stronger performance in the second half.
