As the Ohio State Buckeyes gear up for the upcoming college football season, a significant change in their offensive line is set to bolster their performance. Senior captain Austin Siereveld is expected to transition to the starting right guard position, a move that promises to enhance the team's interior offensive line, which already boasts considerable size and experience.
Ohio State center Carson Hinzman expressed confidence in the revamped offensive line, stating, "It’s a great trio that we can build off of. We all trust each other because we’ve all played with each other through ups and downs, those kinds of things. And I think with the experience we have in the middle right there, I think it’s going to be a great advantage we have." The anticipated trio of Siereveld, Hinzman, and left guard Luke Montgomery brings over five years of combined starting experience, along with an impressive average height and weight of 6 feet 5 inches and 314 pounds.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day highlighted the physicality of the interior line, noting, "When you look at Luke, Carson, and Austin inside right there, that’s a lot of beef in there. So, it certainly has given us a lot of reason to like that." This emphasis on size is crucial as the Buckeyes aim to establish a dominant running game and provide solid protection for their quarterback.
Last season, Siereveld played left tackle, while Hinzman and Montgomery held down the inside positions alongside Tegra Tshabola, who has since transferred to Kentucky. Junior Ian Moore and senior Joshua Padilla emerged as the primary candidates for the vacant spot, both having logged significant playing time in the previous season's concluding games.
Although Day had not finalized the starting lineup by the third week of camp, indications suggested that Moore would likely take the left tackle position, which would pave the way for Siereveld to shift to right guard. This transition was first discussed with Siereveld back in April, and he approached summer workouts with the expectation of returning to the interior line.
Siereveld’s journey began with seven starts at left guard before he took on the challenge of left tackle, where he started 14 games and earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors. Initially hesitant about moving back to right guard, Siereveld quickly recognized the benefits of reuniting with Hinzman and playing alongside Montgomery. He stated, "It’s very uncommon to have three interior guys who’ve played three years. And we’ve just got to take advantage of that, and the connection we have together is just unreal." This camaraderie and familiarity among the linemen are expected to translate into improved performance on the field.
