Former Oklahoma quarterback Jamelle Holieway is home and on the road to recovery.
The 1985 national championship signal-caller posted a lengthy update on Facebook this week, letting Sooners fans and former teammates know that he’s out of the hospital and resting.
The message came after a period of concern for the OU legend, with people across the Sooners community asking for prayers.
“It is a great day today,” Holieway wrote. “I am home, I am resting, and most importantly, I am on the road to recovery.”
Holieway made it clear he felt the support while he was in the hospital and wanted people to know how much it meant.
He thanked everyone who reached out with calls, texts, visits, and prayers, saying the encouragement lifted his spirits during a difficult time. Holieway also gave special recognition to his doctors and their staffs for the care he received.
The most powerful part of the message, though, was directed at his former University of Oklahoma teammates.
“We have always said that what we built at Oklahoma was bigger than football,” Holieway wrote. “This experience reminded me just how true that is.”
He talked about how years may pass and seasons change, but the brotherhood doesn’t go away. The calls, texts, and prayers from former teammates meant the world to him. Holieway said the bond they created went far beyond Memorial Stadium, and that when one of them is going through something, the others show up.
“That is what teammates do. That is what brothers do,” he wrote. “I felt that brotherhood once again.”
Those words will hit home for a lot of people who played with him or followed that era of Oklahoma football. Holieway has always been tied to the program’s identity, especially from the championship teams of the mid-1980s. Moments like this tend to bring that history back to the surface in a real way.
The concern for Holieway had already been circulating. Wallis Marsh, the producer behind the Brian & Boz and Wishbone ESPN 30 for 30, posted on X asking Sooners to pray for him, writing, “Sooners please Pray for Jamelle Holieway. #4 Needs us.”
That post reflected what a lot of people were feeling. When a name like Holieway is dealing with health issues, it resonates across generations of Oklahoma fans.
In his update, Holieway said he is getting stronger every day, following doctor’s orders, and looking forward to getting back to being himself. He closed the message with gratitude and the familiar Sooner sign-off.

It’s a straightforward and sincere update from someone who has meant a lot to the program for decades. Holieway isn’t just a former player — he’s part of Oklahoma football history.
