Tyrell Chatman arrives at Penn State as a true freshman defensive back out of Lincoln, Nebraska, where he starred at North Star High School. The 6’2″ three-star recruit was ranked the No. 3 prospect in Nebraska by both 247Sports and On3. He originally committed to Northern Illinois before flipping to Iowa State, then followed head coach Matt Campbell to Penn State when Campbell took over the program in December.
Chatman was a two-way player in high school. On offense, where he played both quarterback and receiver, he racked up 2,047 total yards and 26 touchdowns for his career. On defense, he piled up 88 tackles, 21 pass breakups, and four interceptions. His senior season alone included 1,145 total yards and 15 touchdowns, along with 30 tackles and 14 pass breakups. This type of production that earned him Omaha World-Herald Super Six honors.
Beyond football, Chatman’s a legitimate track talent, which shows up on tape: he medaled in both the 400m (silver, 48.19) and 200m (bronze, 21.61) and ran sub-10.8 in the 100m. That kind of speed is a big part of why Penn State projects him at cornerback, even after all his high school production came as a two-way athlete.
