The Oologah Lady Mustangs demonstrated their dominance on home turf by winning the Oologah Invitational championship over the weekend, finishing with an impressive 6-0 record. Their success came against tough competitors, including Pryor, Rejoice Christian, Wesleyan Christian, and Skiatook, who all faced the challenge of overcoming the Lady Mustangs on their home court.
Throughout the tournament, Oologah faced several nail-biting matches, with five of their six victories requiring a decisive third set. Notably, they triumphed over Skiatook three times, each match concluding with a 2-1 scoreline. In addition to their victories against Skiatook, the Lady Mustangs also secured wins against Pryor and Rejoice Christian, both in three sets. Their only match that ended without a third set was a sweep against Wesleyan Christian.
Key to Oologah's success was senior setter Isabella DeLaTorre, who was named the tournament's Offensive MVP. DeLaTorre showcased her exceptional skills by accumulating 129 assists over the six matches, while maintaining an impressive service record with just one error in 48 attempts. Her leadership on the court was instrumental in guiding the Lady Mustangs through their challenging matches.
Defensive MVP honors went to sophomore libero Sofie Jensen, who made a significant impact with 58 digs throughout the tournament. Jensen also contributed offensively with seven aces and only three service errors across 54 attempts, highlighting her all-around performance. Additionally, Halle Barron, a sophomore, earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team after a standout performance that included 50 kills, eight blocks, and eight aces.
Oologah's journey through the tournament began with consecutive 2-1 victories over Pryor, Skiatook, and Rejoice Christian, followed by a decisive 2-0 win against Wesleyan Christian. They then faced Skiatook two more times, successfully defeating them both times to secure the championship title without a single loss.
Other local teams also had notable performances during the tournament. The Sequoyah Lady Eagles, with a record of 8-4, started strong with three consecutive wins, defeating Edison 2-1 and sweeping Verdigris 2-0. However, their momentum was halted when they faced Skiatook, who handed them a 2-1 defeat, followed by another loss to Wesleyan Christian, leaving Sequoyah with a final record of 3-2.
The Verdigris Lady Cardinals, who ended the tournament with a record of 8-8, managed to recover from a rocky start. After a 2-1 victory over Edison, they faced two consecutive losses against Wesleyan Christian and Sequoyah. However, they bounced back, winning their last two matches against Pryor and Rejoice Christian, both by a score of 2-1.
In total, the three Rogers County teams combined for a commendable record of 12-4 throughout the tournament, with Oologah standing out as the last team remaining undefeated on their home court. This successful weekend not only highlights Oologah's prowess in volleyball but also underscores the competitive spirit of the local programs in the region.
