Orioles’ Pete Alonso downplays injury scare

The Baltimore Orioles won two straight games against the AL East division leading Tampa Bay Rays, and Pete Alonso has been instrumental in those wins.

That’s why it was particularly concerning when Alonso appeared to limp and struggle in the 10th inning while running to first base.

Alonso says he has played through worse

He showed little concern for the cramp in his right calf.

Alonso said: “I’ve hobbled around before in my career, played through worse. It is what it is. Just got to stay on top of some work, and it is what it is. Feel fine, feel good. Got a game in maybe like 18 hours or so, so I’ve got to do whatever I can to get ready for that. I’m in good hands, I feel good. I’m going to be in there tomorrow.”

Will Alonso be DH?

There is a possibility Alonso could get the day off at first base and be plugged into the DH spot for the third game in the series on August 16.

Alonso is an iron man of sorts having reached the 500 consecutive game mark in late June.

While it is unlikely he will reach Cal Ripken Jr’s status (2,632 consecutive games), 537 straight games played since June 18, 2023 is impressive. It is the second longest consecutive game streak among active players. (Matt Olson leads with 903.)

Orioles need a healthy Alonso

The Orioles need Alonso’s leadership on the field and in the clubhouse if they are going to make a serious run for a wildcard spot.

There is currently a five-way tie for the final AL MLB wildcard.
