Pair of South Carolina stars likely to miss beginning of 2026 season

South Carolina will likely be without two of its top players for the start of the 2026 season.

Shane Beamer said Wednesday that star edge rusher Dylan Stewart and transfer left tackle addition Jacarrius Peak are not likely to play in the Gamecocks' season opener against Kent State on Sept. 5. Stewart is dealing with a back injury suffered midway through last season, while Peak injured his knee playing basketball in February.

Beamer doesn't seem worried that either injury will present long-term hurdles and said he expects both back "very soon." He addressed the injuries on Tuesday but did not provide a specific timetable.

“They each have benchmarks that they’re accomplishing each week and checkups that they have with doctors and specialists," Beamer said, per the Greenville News. "And both of them had those last week, and everything was positive and ahead of schedule in some ways. So they’re both eager to get back out there and are closer and closer each and every day since I’ve seen you guys last.”Stewart has 11 sacks in two years with South Carolina, while Peak was an All-ACC honorable mention at NC State in 2025.
