The Pakistan cricket team is currently grappling with internal issues as a senior member of the selection committee has raised concerns regarding the management of opener Imam-ul-Haq's calf injury. This scrutiny comes in the wake of Pakistan's disappointing 194-run defeat to England in the second Test at Lord's, where Imam did not bat in either innings.
Aaqib Javed, a prominent figure on Pakistan's four-member selection panel, has called for an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Imam's injury. During an interview with Pakistan's Geo TV, Javed expressed skepticism about how a player could miss both innings due to a muscle injury, questioning the protocols in place for injury management.
"An inquiry will be conducted into this matter," Javed stated, emphasizing the need for accountability within the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He pointed out that there have been numerous instances in cricket history where players have managed to bat despite injuries, raising doubts about Imam's commitment to the game. "Injuries do occur and we have seen instances in the past where players -- even with casts -- have gone out and made an effort. This situation is different. It is a matter of great concern, and action will be taken regarding it," he added.
Imam sustained his calf injury while fielding on the first day of the Lord's Test and was unable to participate further in the match. His absence drew criticism, particularly after former chief selector Mohammad Wasim questioned the decision. On the fourth day of the match, Imam was spotted on the outfield, attempting shadow batting with his left calf heavily strapped, though he appeared to be limping.
This incident is part of a broader context of turmoil within the Pakistan cricket setup, especially after the team suffered losses in the first two Tests at Headingley and Lord's. Following these defeats, the PCB made the decision to recall Imam along with head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul. The board has since appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and bowling coach Ashley Noffke to lead the team in the upcoming third Test, which is set to take place in Birmingham on September 9.
In a bid to rejuvenate the squad, the selectors have included five uncapped players for the final Test, alongside openers Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, who collectively have only 10 Test appearances. This decision reflects the PCB's attempt to inject fresh talent into the team amid ongoing challenges.
Additionally, Javed addressed reports of discord between the selectors and team management regarding the playing XI for the Lord's Test. He revealed that he had advocated for the inclusion of fast-bowling all-rounder Ubaid Shah and wicketkeeper-batter Ghazi Ghori, suggesting that they would have strengthened the team. However, only Salman Ali Agha was replaced after leading the team in the first Test while Babar Azam was unavailable. "We can’t just keep waiting,” Javed remarked, highlighting the urgency for improvement within the team.
