ISLAMABAD: Pakistan showcased their dominance in volleyball by clinching the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Championship title on Wednesday, defeating Bangladesh in a decisive straight-sets victory at the Liaquat Gymnasium within the Pakistan Sports Complex.
The national team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, which featured six competing nations, including Kazakhstan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Uzbekistan. Their performance in the final was a testament to their skill and teamwork, as they consistently applied pressure on their opponents.
In the opening set, Pakistan secured a 25-20 victory, setting the tone for the match. They elevated their game in the second set, demonstrating exceptional coordination and tactical execution to win comfortably at 25-16. Although Bangladesh attempted to rally in the third set, Pakistan maintained their composure and control, ultimately sealing the match with a final set score of 25-20.
This championship win marked a perfect tournament run for Pakistan, as they emerged victorious in all seven matches, not dropping a single set throughout the competition. Their impressive performance has propelled them eight spots up to 38th in the FIVB world rankings, making them the sixth-best team in Asia, trailing only behind Japan, Iran, Qatar, Korea, and China.
In the bronze medal match, Sri Lanka triumphed over Uzbekistan in a thrilling five-set encounter, with scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25, and 15-11. Kazakhstan finished in fifth place, while Nepal ended the tournament in last place.
Chaudhry Mohammad Yaqoob, chairman of the Pakistan Volleyball Federation (PVF), expressed his congratulations to the national team for their outstanding achievement. He stated, "On behalf of the federation, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our players, coaching staff, officials, and the entire volleyball family on winning the CAVA Volleyball Championship. This historic triumph reflects the dedication, discipline, and tireless efforts of our players and coaches. Hosting and winning this prestigious championship is a proud moment for Pakistan."
PVF president Sohail Khawar Mir also praised the team's performance, highlighting the significance of winning the championship without losing a single set. He remarked, "This extraordinary achievement is a testament to the exceptional talent, preparation, and commitment of our players and coaching staff. The entire nation is proud of this remarkable performance." He also acknowledged the competitive spirit of Bangladesh and other participating nations, emphasizing that the event has strengthened volleyball's presence in the Central Asian region and bolstered Pakistan's reputation as a capable host of international sporting events.
