It's almost impossible to tell why the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez haven't agreed on a new contract.
The idea that Gonzalez and the Patriots aren't going to get something done is scary to consider, and the longer it drags on, the more questions will pop up.
The Patriots have to get something done soon if they want to feel confident about him staying long-term, though it remains uncertain when that will happen. Recently, Devin McCourty said a lot about the situation and why it might not be finalized yet.
“My guess would be language. I have to imagine that the Pats knew kind of where they were going to be at in average per year and new money. A lot of time with these deals, it’s the language,” McCourty said, H/T FanSided.
“It’s those little perky things and the language that, if you get into the weeds of it as a player, like I think guys should be, those are things that you are going to push to get. Those are things you have to go back and forth on. I know the contracts that I’ve done, it was that kind of language that, as a player, I always pushed for," he added.
McCourty understands what goes on behind the scenes in contract situations like this, given he went through them in his career.
The only thing that's a tad worrisome is nobody has made it seem like there are any backend problems in this contract that stand out, and that's why it isn't done.
