The New England Patriots took a short break from preparing for their final preseason game to visit a place that puts every training camp competition into perspective.
New England toured the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, on Wednesday, one day before facing the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field.
The team shared photos and video from the visit on its social media accounts, writing, “The squad stopped by the Pro Football Hall of Fame.”
The Patriots’ official website also published a photo gallery documenting the trip.
For established players, the visit offered an opportunity to appreciate the history of the game and the Patriots who helped build the franchise. For younger players fighting to extend their NFL careers, it was a reminder of just how much history can be created with one opportunity.
Patriots Get A History Lesson Before Final AuditionThe timing of the visit made it especially meaningful. New England will close its preseason Thursday at 8 p.m. ET against Cleveland. While the result will not count in the standings, the game could determine which players survive the team’s final roster decisions.
Several Patriots entered the trip to Ohio with jobs still on the line. The final exhibition gives those players one more chance to show Mike Vrabel and New England’s personnel department that they can contribute on offense, defense or special teams.

The Patriots have no shortage of connections to Canton. Their Hall of Fame representatives include franchise icons such as John Hannah, Andre Tippett, Ty Law, Richard Seymour and Randy Moss. Adam Vinatieri became the latest prominent former Patriot to receive football’s highest individual honor when he was inducted earlier this month. Vinatieri spent his first 10 NFL seasons with New England and delivered the winning kicks in Super Bowls XXXVI and XXXVIII.
His recent induction gave the current Patriots another direct connection to the history surrounding them during Wednesday’s tour.

Patriots Turn Attention Back To BrownsThe sightseeing portion of New England’s trip is now over. The Patriots enter the preseason finale with a 1-0-1 record after tying the Indianapolis Colts, 13-13, and defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-21.
New England’s starters are not expected to receive the same workload as players competing for backup roles. That should create extended opportunities for rookies, undrafted free agents and other roster hopefuls against Cleveland.
Special teams could be particularly important. Players near the bottom of the depth chart frequently secure roster spots by proving they can cover kicks, return punts or contribute in multiple phases. Vrabel has repeatedly emphasized the importance of developing depth throughout the roster. Thursday represents the final game opportunity for that depth to reveal itself before the regular season begins Sept. 9 against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Patriots spent Wednesday looking at football immortality. By Thursday night, several players will simply be trying to keep their NFL journeys alive.
