Tom Brady is undeniably a winner and competitor, but his loyalties don’t run as deep as New England Patriots faithful might hope.
In fact, as we’ve learned, if you throw him enough money, Brady will be loyal to just about anything.
His lack of love for the franchise he won six Super Bowls with was never clearer than before last year’s big game, when the Fox Sports announcer initially refused to back New England in their showdown with the Seattle Seahawks, saying “I don’t have a dog in the fight in this one. May the best team win,” adding that the only thing he was rooting for “good football.”
Several days later, he backtracked, sharing a photo of him with Patriots owner Robert Kraft and urging him to “Get that 7th ring so we can match.”
The Seahawks dominated the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX, so he’ll have to try again.
While Brady might have come around following the PR backlash, the damage was done in the eyes of some. That includes New England linebacker Robert Spillane, who was particularly bothered by the GOAT’s lack of loyalty at the time, saying that “personally it makes me sick” in the days afterward.
Spillane was asked again about his thoughts during a recent appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show and expanded on why it bothered him.

“It irritated me, and it made me feel sad for him, spending 20 years here, obviously, went on to do amazing, great things, not only on the football field but in the community, and to say that he had no care in the world, it irritated me,” Spillane said during an appearance on WEEI, via Pro Football Talk. “It made me feel sad for him. But at the end of the day, that was just my personal opinion. Everyone else has their own opinions in the locker room.”
To be fair, Brady moved on from the Patriots somewhat acrimoniously, won another Super Bowl with the Buccaneers, is now an owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, and works for Fox Sports, so his loyalties have shifted many times since playing for New England. And when you consider that he was trying to hire then-Seahawks coordinator Klint Kubiak as the Raiders’ next head coach, you can see how he’d want to couch his public support.
For his part, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel took a diplomatic approach when asked about the comments, saying that Brady has made it clear he’s “doing something new now.”
Still, it’s understandible why those loyal to the Patriots and their fans would feel miffed by the whole thing.
