Christian Gonzalez’s future with the New England Patriots might be generating questions, but his standing across the NFL has never been clearer.

Gonzalez landed at No. 28 on the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2026 list, making him one of the highest-ranked cornerbacks in the league. The annual rankings are determined by votes from NFL players.

The honor represents an enormous jump for Gonzalez, who checked in at No. 84 on the 2025 list. After helping New England reach Super Bowl LX, the 24-year-old climbed 56 spots in a single year.

That rise demonstrates how highly opponents regard the Patriots’ top defensive player. It also arrived at an interesting time.

Gonzalez was absent from New England’s joint practice with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday as questions continued to surround his unresolved contract situation. The reason for his absence was not immediately disclosed, so it would be premature to connect it directly to negotiations.

Still, the timing ensured his name remained one of the biggest stories surrounding the Patriots.

Gonzalez earned his first Pro Bowl selection after establishing himself as one of the league’s premier shutdown cornerbacks in 2025. He routinely followed opponents’ No. 1 receivers and played an essential role in New England’s run through the AFC playoffs. Although Gonzalez did not post overwhelming interception numbers during the regular season, quarterbacks rarely found success when testing him.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young praised Gonzalez’s preparation and refined approach after facing him during the 2025 season.

“He’s super smart. Elite technique. He can get his hands on guys,” Young said.

Former Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White was equally complimentary.

“It looks so easy for him,” White said. “He goes up and gets the best guy each and every week, and that’s what you want from your top corner. Very competitive. Christian is a baller.”

Gonzalez saved some of his best work for the postseason.

His interception against the Denver Broncos sealed New England’s victory in the AFC Championship Game. He then delivered another impressive performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX, despite the Patriots falling short of a championship.

Patriots punter Bryce Baringer described Gonzalez as a special talent and teammate.

“It’s just awesome to see him do his thing,” Baringer said. “He’s a lockdown dude.”

Gonzalez’s placement on the Top 100 list could add another wrinkle to his contract talks with the Patriots. The cornerback has developed into an indispensable piece of New England’s defense. He has also built a strong argument that he deserves to be compensated among the NFL’s best players at his position.

Gonzalez is entering the fourth season of the rookie contract he signed after New England selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Patriots exercised his fifth-year option earlier this offseason, keeping him under team control through 2027. That gives New England time, but it does not eliminate the urgency of securing one of its foundational players.

Gonzalez’s ranking shows this is not merely an organization valuing one of its own draft picks. His peers now consider him one of the 30 best players in the entire league. The Patriots will eventually need to pay him accordingly if they want to avoid his contract becoming a lingering distraction.

For now, Gonzalez’s practice absence will receive attention until the team provides more clarity. His latest NFL honor, however, leaves no ambiguity about his reputation.
