The New England Patriots resolved their crowded wide receiver situation with a significant trade Monday.
New England is trading Kayshon Boutte to the Houston Texans in exchange for safety Jaylen Reed and a draft pick, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reported. Yahoo Sports shared the news shortly afterward.
The round and year of the draft pick were not immediately reported. The move ends months of speculation surrounding Boutte, who became an obvious trade candidate after the Patriots remade their receiving corps during the offseason. New England acquired A.J. Brown and signed Romeo Doubs, creating fewer opportunities for Boutte in the final year of his rookie contract.
Rather than allow the 24-year-old to slide down the depth chart, the Patriots turned him into a young defensive back and additional draft capital.
Patriots Cash In On Crowded Receiver RoomBoutte joined the Patriots as a sixth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. After catching only two passes as a rookie, the former LSU standout developed into one of Drake Maye’s most effective downfield targets. Boutte caught 33 passes for 551 yards and six touchdowns during the 2025 regular season. His 16.7 yards per reception ranked fifth among qualified NFL pass-catchers.

— Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) August 24, 2026He added nine receptions for 168 yards and one touchdown during New England’s run to Super Bowl LX. That included a three-catch, 75-yard performance against the Texans in the AFC divisional round.
Despite that production, Boutte’s future in New England became uncertain after the Patriots added Brown and Doubs. The team also has DeMario Douglas, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III competing for roles.
Boutte reportedly was open to a trade after the offensive overhaul. He was entering the last year of his rookie agreement and appeared unlikely to receive the target volume necessary to improve his value before reaching free agency. Reuters reported in June that Boutte was interested in a move following the additions of Brown and Doubs.
Houston presented a logical destination. The Texans had explored the receiver market after Jayden Higgins suffered a season-ending knee injury and reportedly contacted New England about Boutte before the deal materialized.

What Jaylen Reed Brings To New EnglandReed gives Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel another young and versatile option for his defense. The 6-foot, 212-pound safety was selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Reed appeared in seven regular-season games as a rookie, making 14 tackles and recovering one fumble.
He also appeared in two playoff games and recorded five tackles. Reed was a two-year starter at Penn State and earned second-team All-Big Ten honors following his senior season. He recorded 98 tackles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries during his final college campaign. His physical playing style and experience working at multiple spots in the secondary could make him an intriguing developmental piece for Vrabel.
The 23-year-old recorded six tackles, including four solo stops, through Houston’s first two preseason games this summer. New England already had Kevin Byard, Jaylinn Hawkins, Craig Woodson and Dell Pettus among its safety options. Reed now will compete for a reserve role while offering potential value on special teams.
The trade gives both players clearer opportunities. Boutte heads to a Texans offense that needs receiver help, while Reed joins a Patriots defense that can take advantage of his versatility. For New England, the decision also provides another indication of how dramatically its offense has changed. Boutte led the Patriots’ wide receivers in touchdowns last season. Months later, the additions of Brown and Doubs made him expendable.
The Patriots did not simply clear their logjam. They converted a former sixth-round pick entering a contract year into another young player and an additional draft asset.
