MONETT — In a remarkable achievement, Peyton Brandt, a senior volleyball player at Monett High School, has made history by recording her 1,000th career kill. This milestone was reached during a match against Crane on August 31, making Brandt the first player in the school's history to accomplish this feat.
Reflecting on her achievement, Brandt expressed her gratitude for the support she has received throughout her journey. "It was the best. It’s always great to achieve an accomplishment like that, but it’s even better to have people surrounding me that support me so much. It’s just a great feeling to have all of them around me," she shared.
Brandt's passion for volleyball runs deep, influenced by her mother’s own history with the sport. She discovered her love for the game in the fourth grade, and since then, she has developed into a formidable player known for her powerful kills and impressive blocks. "It’s always been a goal for me to hit 1,000," Brandt stated. "I realized it at the end of sophomore year and it was really something that I wanted to work for. It then became reachable during my junior season."
As the season progresses, the Monett Cubs currently hold a record of 3-4-2, with victories against teams such as Sarcoxie, New Heights Christian Academy, and Ava. Despite the early challenges, Brandt remains optimistic about the team's potential for improvement. "It’s been a good start to the season. There’s room for improvement. Our skills are there and we know what we need to improve on. So far, I’m really proud of everyone and how we’ve been playing," she noted.
Throughout her career, Brandt has been a pivotal player for the Cubs, consistently contributing to the team's offensive efforts with her scoring ability. Her growth as a player has been significant, especially since last season, and she has garnered interest from Division II colleges. Brandt has worked diligently to enhance her hitting skills, becoming a more versatile attacker. "Definitely freshman year, I didn’t know how to swing line. I only swung down the middle. Since then, I’ve learned how to hit the ball in places that people aren’t at, hitting line, hitting across, tipping when needed," she explained.
Looking ahead, the Cubs have set their sights on winning the district championship, a title that has eluded them in recent years. Monett has faced tough competition from Mount Vernon, who has narrowly defeated them in the past two seasons. Brandt is determined to lead her team to victory, emphasizing the importance of resilience and a positive mindset. "We’ve fallen short, but this year we are determined to go and win that title. We are working on our mindset right now. We are learning that mistakes happen and that we can move on from it and to push through it," she said.
With her historic milestone and a strong desire to succeed, Peyton Brandt is not only making a name for herself in Monett volleyball but is also inspiring her teammates to strive for greatness. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on Brandt and the Cubs as they pursue their goal of capturing the district championship.
