A Philadelphia man has been apprehended and charged with several felonies following an attempted break-in at the residence of Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley earlier this summer. The suspect, Jabir Parker, 24, was taken into custody on Tuesday and is facing charges related to two successful break-ins and an attempted break-in at a third property in the Philadelphia area.
According to reports, Parker's first two break-ins occurred on June 22 and in early July, during which he allegedly stole approximately $107,000 worth of jewelry from the first home and more than $687,000 worth from a second residence. These incidents highlight a concerning trend of high-value burglaries in the area.
The attempted break-in at Barkley's home took place on July 18. While the authorities did not initially disclose the identity of the homeowners, NBC10 confirmed that the property belongs to Barkley and his family. During the incident, the homeowners were reportedly awakened by unusual noises and discovered an unknown male inside their home, prompting them to call 911.
Fortunately, Barkley confirmed to NBC10 that no one was harmed during the attempted break-in. In response to the alarming event, he has since increased security measures at his residence to ensure the safety of his family.
Parker is currently facing multiple felony charges, including burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on September 10. This case adds to a troubling pattern of burglaries involving NFL players, with other athletes, such as Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, also falling victim to similar crimes. Lamb had over $300,000 worth of luxury bags stolen from his home during training camp.
In addition to Lamb, notable players like Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Tennessee Titans lineman Jeffery Simmons have reported break-ins at their residences. Earlier this year, seven individuals were charged for burglarizing the homes of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, among others, showcasing a worrying trend affecting professional athletes.
As for Barkley, he had a standout season last year, rushing for 1,140 yards and scoring nine total touchdowns. This marked his second season with the Eagles, during which he played a pivotal role in the team's Super Bowl victory the previous year. The Eagles are set to kick off their new season against the Washington Commanders on September 13, and Barkley will be looking to build on his impressive performance from the last season.
