Pittsburgh Pirates Focus on 1-0 Mindset as Season Winds Down

The Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in a challenging position as they approach the final stretch of the 2026 MLB season. While they are not entirely out of contention for a playoff spot in the National League, their path to the postseason remains unclear. This precarious situation has led the team to reevaluate their goals and mindset as they head into the last month of regular-season play.

In light of their current standings, it’s crucial for the Pirates to maintain a clear focus on what they are playing for. Manager Don Kelly has been vocal about the importance of a unified approach among the players. Recently, he shared insights into the team’s mindset, particularly after a series against the Miami Marlins. Kelly emphasized the significance of adopting a '1-0 mindset' for each day of competition, which encourages players to concentrate on the present rather than the past or future.

“We talked about that a little while ago, maybe after the Miami series, of having that 1-0 mindset every single day,” Kelly explained. “Just showing up to compete like that, trying to take care of that day, and I think that the guys have done a really good job of it. We can’t get too far ahead, and we can’t worry about what happened yesterday. We just have to tackle the day, and I think that the guys have been doing a really good job.”

Since implementing this mindset, the Pirates have seen some positive results on the field. As of August 15, the team has posted an 8-7 record and has successfully won their last four series. This performance has sparked a glimmer of hope for the Pirates, who remain five games out of a Wild Card spot. General Manager Ben Cherington has expressed optimism about the team’s potential to make a late-season push, underscoring that a string of victories could still keep their playoff dreams alive.

In a broader context, Kelly’s approach may also serve to alleviate pressure from a relatively young and inexperienced roster. The Pirates are in a rebuilding phase, and the mental aspect of the game is often just as crucial as the physical. Kelly noted that players tend to put pressure on themselves, and learning to manage that pressure is key to their development. “I do think that the guys any player is going to put pressure on themselves, and it’s learning how to handle that and how to navigate it and how to stay within yourself in those moments,” he said.

As the Pirates continue to embrace the 1-0 mindset, it remains to be seen how this philosophy will influence their performance over the remainder of the season. If they can sustain their focus and find success with this approach, the outcome of their 2026 campaign could be more promising than initially anticipated. With only a few weeks left in the regular season, every game counts, and the Pirates are determined to make the most of their opportunities.
