PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Pirates delivered a stunning performance on Tuesday night at PNC Park, defeating the San Francisco Giants 13-12 in a dramatic walk-off victory. This game was particularly significant for Giants reliever Braxton Roxby, a Windber Area graduate, who made his return to western Pennsylvania.
Roxby entered the contest in the bottom of the third inning, marking just his second major league appearance. After a successful outing against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he pitched a scoreless inning, expectations were high for the right-handed reliever. However, Roxby faced a challenging situation as he took the mound with the Pirates already leading 5-3 and looking to extend their advantage.
Despite getting ahead in the count against several batters, Roxby struggled to contain the Pirates’ offense. He allowed four singles and ultimately four runs to score during his time on the mound, with two of those runs charged directly to him. The Pirates capitalized on Roxby’s struggles, scoring a total of nine runs in the third inning alone, turning a three-run deficit into an 11-5 lead.
Reflecting on his performance, Roxby stated, “If I can take anything from what I’ve learned this season and worked on in the mental game, it’s I’ve just got to stick to my process. Today was one of those days that the process was good.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on the process rather than the outcome, acknowledging that not every outing would yield favorable results.
Giants manager Tony Vitello recognized the difficulty of the situation Roxby faced, saying, “He was brought in as about as tough a deal as it gets. For him to be asked to do that is quite the challenge.” Vitello praised Roxby for his determination, noting that he managed to get out of the inning despite the onslaught from the Pirates.
During the pivotal third inning, Pirates catcher Henry Davis stole second base on one of Roxby’s pitches, setting the stage for Spencer Horwitz, who delivered a two-run single. Following a series of hits, including a two-run single from Oneil Cruz, Roxby found himself in a tough spot with the bases loaded before finally escaping the inning.
As the game progressed, the Giants managed to tie the score at 12-12 with a five-run rally in the eighth inning. However, the Pirates sealed their victory in the bottom of the ninth, scoring on a walk-off error. This thrilling finish highlighted the resilience of the Pirates, who showcased their ability to overcome adversity.
Roxby concluded his outing allowing four hits and hitting a batter, but he remained optimistic about his future performances. “Today sucks. I didn’t get the job done, but the process was good,” he said. “I think if I stack days like that, at the end of the year, you look back and had a pretty successful year.”
With Roxby’s experience against a potent Pirates lineup that amassed 19 hits, Vitello believes there are valuable lessons to be learned from this outing. He remarked, “Whatever outing he gets the ball put in his hand from this point on, it’s not going to be tougher circumstances.” As the season progresses, both Roxby and the Giants will look to build on their experiences and improve their performances moving forward.
