Pleasant, Mount Gilead rebound in Week 2 for football victories

Pleasant showed it could bounce back after a tough loss. A week after a 49-7 loss at North Union, the Spartans delivered its own rout, beating Triad 51-14 to highlight Week 2 on Aug. 28.

Pleasant's Weston Shaffer made it happen in a variety of ways against Triad (1-1). He was 9-for-10 passing for 114 yards and three touchdowns, but also ran it 24 times for 389 rushing yards, adding three more scores.

Keean Perriguey led Pleasant (1-1) with three catches for 73 yards and a TD, while Madden Queen and Evan Pfieffer also made TD receptions. Ryan Conway ran in a touchdown, too.

On defense, Ethan Craycraft recorded a pair of sacks, while Conway had five tackles, and Mason Queen picked off a pass.

Here are more results from Week 2 high school football games involving Marion-area squads:

Mount Gilead (1-1) led 19-0 and 27-3, then held off from there. MG rolled up 366 total yards all on the ground, while the Rams (1-1) ended with 316 total yards.

Kadin St. Clair had a big night for MG's defense, making 12 tackles, two for loss, a sack, an interceptions and a fumble recovery. On offense, Tyler Harr ran it 19 times for 133 yards and a touchdowns, while Boe Sayers posted 122 yards on 25 carries and a score, and Wyatt Long ran six times for 94 yards and two TDs.

"I am very proud of how our boys bounced back after getting beaten soundly by Martins Ferry last week," MG coach Mike Reid said, referring back to the 42-19 season-opening loss. "They showed a lot of heart, grit, and growth this week. We found out a lot about our character."

The Presidents (1-1) hung around with Ashland (2-0) but couldn't come away with the Erie Bell trophy, dropping the game in Harding Stadium 27-13. It was 14-6 at halftime and Harding cut it to 21-13 early in the fourth period.

Dez Feliciano hit Jaden Jordan for a touchdowns, and Marcus McGary ran in the other. Feliciano was 6-fo-27 passing for 77 yards, while McGary ran it 12 times for 68 yards, and Mattic Simmers ran it seven times for 40 yards. Simmers produced seven tackles as McGary picked off a pass and Jordan added five tackles. Ashland was limited to 262 total yards, and the Presidents had 212.

It was Madison's first home victory since 2024 and it was the most points scored by the program since Week 3 of 2016. River Valley (0-2) lost four turnovers in the game. Carson Cook put up 195 yards and three touchdowns on 16-for-19 passing for the Rams (1-1), and teammate Damarrion Lloyd rushed for 80 yards on seven carries and a score.

The Warriors (1-1) rolled to a 42-0 halftime lead, finishing the game with 317 passing yards and 405 total yards. Cardington (0-2) did not complete a pass. Dillion Donkin led the Pirates with 77 yards rushing on seven carries, and Laythan Ralston had 55 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns.

The Smithies (2-0) rolled up 21 first downs and 448 yards of offense compared to Northmor's 12 first downs and 175 yards of which 35 came on the ground. Tanner Miley was 13 of 22 passing for 129 yards and a touchdown for Northmor. Jackson Welch led with five catches for 20 yards as eight different Golden Knights (0-2) caught a pass.

North Union moved its record to 2-0 after shutting out Waynesfield-Goshen (1-1) 48-0. Heath (1-1) slipped by Highland (1-1) 14-6. No other information from these two games was made available.
