Aug. 22—Lincoln Coaty threw for one touchdown and lateraled for another but Northwood/Solon Springs began its 2026 season with a 14-12 defeat at Frederic in VIII-player football on Friday night, Aug. 21.
After falling behind, N/SS recovered quickly, as Coaty found Taven Nelson on a 36-yard pass play that tied the game at 6 with 4:12 to play in the first quarter.
Frederic scored again late in the first half to take a 14-6 edge into the halftime break, but N/SS found the end zone one more time. Coaty carried for 5 yards, then pitched to Tucker Madsen, who carried it 5 more yards to score with 3:16 left in the third quarter.
The two-point conversion failed and Frederic held the visitors off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
Northwood/Solon Springs remains on the road next week for a Sept. 28 game at Bruce before a Sept. 4 home opener vs. Flambeau.
Superior made a clean sweep of three opponents in a girls tennis meet at Laura MacArthur Elementary School in West Duluth.
In the 7-0 Lake Superior Conference win over Duluth Denfeld, Superior dropped a total of eight games over the seven varsity flights. No. 1 singles Lily Clark faced the toughest battle, defeating Denfeld's Anissa MacMillan 6-2, 6-2, while Alli Mihalik topped Vanessa Pascone 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.
Superior also swept matches against Stella Maris and Minneapolis Roosevelt.
The Sentinels' doubles teams put up a strong fight, with Superior's Lily Mahan and Nora Madsen fending off Hannah Kime and Lucy Phillips 6-4, 7-5, while the No. 1 Spartans team of Ava Dahl-Evelyn Patrick and No. 2 team of Henleigh Helenius-Holland Helenius both won 6-2, 6-1.
Stella Maris defeated Denfeld 5- 2 in their match, with several close flights. Patrick and Elyce Klos-Maki of the Sentinels outlasted Aubry Freberg and Elaria Weiss of Denfeld 7-6 (4), 6-3, while No. 4 singles Susanna Broadway of the Sentinels defeated Denfeld's Zoe Radzak 7-6 (7), 6-3.
MacMillan took a super tiebreaker 10-5 over Della Seyfer to claim one of Denfeld's two points. She also won in Denfeld's 5-2 loss to Minneapolis Roosevelt, as did Pascone at No. 3.
On Thursday, Duluth East topped the Spartans 5-2. Clark and Anna James won the first two singles flights for Superior, but the Greyhounds had the rest, including a 6-1, 7-6 (5) win for Louisa Hill at No. 2 singles and close wins at No. 2 doubles for Cadence Fisher-Aleta Kimber (6-4, 6-4) and No. 3 doubles for Helen Lindello and Addy Wheeler (6-4, 7-5).
