Nneka Ogwumike shocked the WNBA world after she announced her retirement earlier this week. The 15-year veteran is still one of the top players in the league, but her last WNBA season hasn’t been how she would have liked to say goodbye to her professional career. The LA Sparks have struggled throughout the season, but the head coach believes Ogwumike’s retirement could spark something positive in her team.
“I do think it’s going to rally the troops a little bit. The respect that everybody has for her is paramount. I know that we’re going to play a little bit harder, a little bit more intentionally, knowing that this is it for her,” Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts said in an interview with John Davis during practice.
Ogwumike commands a lot of respect within the WNBA community, both among players and coaches. She has been an elite player and one of the greatest in the Sparks’ franchise history. Winning games as a champion would be the farewell she deserves.
“I also feel like when you get back on the road, it might change some things there. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of these other teams might want to say thank you to her as well because she’s only played for two teams in this league, but as the president of the union, she’s impacted every single team and every single player,” Roberts added.
The Sparks drafted Nneka Ogwumike at No. 1 overall in the 2012 WNBA draft. She played the first 12 years of her career with the team, winning a title and an MVP award along with multiple All-Defensive and All-WNBA teams.
After a two-year stint with the Seattle Storm in 2024 and 2025, Nneka Ogwumike returned to the Sparks for the 2026 season, her 15th. The decision was made during the training camp, and now she is finishing with the team she wanted to, even when they haven’t been great lately.
The Sparks have lost six games in a row, and the latest one came on Thursday against the Atlanta Dream. They suffered a 36-point loss. They have eight more games left in the season, and the Sparks might want to give Nneka Ogwumike the winning farewell that she rightfully deserves.
Ogwumike has been WNBPA president for 10 years now. During her leadership, the players association signed the historic 2026 Collective Bargaining Agreement, helped players get family planning benefits, and extended more protections to the players. The WNBA signed a $2.2 billion media deal amid its unprecedented success.
The Sparks star has earned the respect of her peers and coaches around the league.
