Rahane once ejected Jaiswal from a Duleep Trophy match for excessive sledging

Jaiswal was once sent off the field by his captain Ajinkya Rahane for excessive sledging. The incident occurred during the 2022 Duleep Trophy final between West Zone and South Zone.

On the final day of the summit clash, Jaiswal was constantly sledging opposition batter Ravi Teja. Rahane spoke to Jaiswal after being given multiple warnings, but the latter didn’t budge, continuing his verbal volleys.

The umpires then formally complained to Rahane about his unruly behaviour. After that, the West Zone skipper asked Jaiswal to go off the field, and he only returned after being away for seven overs.

West Zone won the match by 294 runs to lift the Duleep Trophy and Jaiswal also won the player of the match award for his sensational double century. But the incident remained a talking point for some time.

After the match, Rahane opened up on the matter, saying, “You have to follow rules and respect the game, your opponents and the umpires. That’s the way I have always played my cricket and I will continue to do so. There are certain things you must follow on the field, if you don’t, you get off the field. This is my mantra.”

“I believe in always respecting your opponents, umpires and match officials. So you have to handle certain incidents in a certain manner,” he added.

Jaiswal wasn’t happy with cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle's criticisim that the India opener should have walked off instead of responding to the send-off. But the latter felt the cricket pundit shouldn't 'make his judgment' without knowing what was said to him.

“If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment if anyone cross [sic] the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply,” Jaiswal commented on Instagram.

Interestingly, the India opener was also involved in a light-hearted exchange of words with Niroshan Dickwella in the first Test. He goaded the wicketkeeper-batter to play a hook shot. Dickwella, in response, stated that he would do so "if you take me to IPL". Jaiswal replied, "If you hit him there, I will definitely tell Sanga [Rajasthan Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara]."

The exchange worked out well for India as Dickwella got out in the same over, trying to cut Prasidh Krishna by backing away towards the leg-side. He could only edge the ball to Rishabh Pant.
