Raiders Conduct 16-Player Workout to Address Roster Concerns Ahead of Season

As the NFL season approaches, the Las Vegas Raiders are actively seeking reinforcements for their roster. On Thursday, the team conducted a workout for 16 players, as reported by the NFL transaction wire. This significant move highlights the Raiders' concerns about depth at key positions, particularly in light of recent injuries and roster changes.

Among the notable names present at the workout were former New York Giants first-round pick Evan Neal, veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and pass rushers Azeez Ojulari, B.J. Ojulari, and David Ojabo. Neal's inclusion is particularly intriguing, especially following the Raiders' recent trade of versatile lineman Jordan Meredith to the New York Jets. Drafted seventh overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, Neal has had a challenging career thus far, struggling at tackle before being released by the Giants after transitioning to guard.

The Raiders' offensive line depth remains a concern, prompting them to evaluate additional options. In addition to Neal, the team worked out guards Evan Beerntsen, center Trey Hill, and tackles Christian Jones and Colby Sorsdal. This suggests that despite the return of Kolton Miller and Jackson Powers-Johnson from injuries, Las Vegas is still keen on solidifying their offensive front.

Wide receiver is another position of pressing concern for the Raiders. Rookie Dont’e Thornton Jr. was placed on injured reserve after failing to participate in any preseason games, joining fellow receivers Justin Shorter, Corey Rucker, and Chase Roberts on the IR list. With the current receiving corps led by Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor, and Jack Bech, head coach Klint Kubiak has publicly acknowledged the need for more reliable options in the receiving game, stating that the team is "still looking" for dependable players ahead of the regular season.

The workout also aimed to bolster the Raiders' front seven, which has been affected by injuries. Third-round rookie Keyron Crawford suffered a season-ending ankle injury during the preseason finale, while Brennan Jackson is also on the injured reserve list. To address this, the Raiders took a closer look at both Ojulari brothers, along with Ojabo and linebacker Dasan McCullough, indicating their intent to strengthen the defensive unit.

While participating in a workout does not guarantee a signing, the Raiders' proactive approach demonstrates their commitment to improving their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season. The workout's focus on specific positions reveals the areas where the coaching staff believes additional support is crucial. As the Raiders finalize their roster ahead of Week 1, it remains to be seen which players will ultimately join the team in their quest for success this season.
