Rams Backup QB Battle Takes Turn After Stetson Bennett Performance

Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Stetson Bennett shined in his second preseason game of the year, showing up rookie Ty Simpson, who stole the spotlight in the first game.

Bennett went 14-of-31 passing for 181 passing yards in a scheme that was very basic, featuring a good amount of dink-and-dunk passes and simple reads as well.

The former Georgia quarterback didn’t amaze with any of his throws, and given his profile, he is not a quarterback meant to do that. Instead, he wins by making reads and minimizing risk as much as possible.

He did just that, and after playing the whole first half, he handed the keys off to Ty Simpson.

Bennet has not played a regular-season snap; instead, he has been buried as the third quarterback on the depth chart over the past few years, sitting behind former Rams quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The QB noted the challenges he has faced, but this is his chance to impress the Rams brass.

“It definitely was tough, just watching out there and not really doing anything during practice, not really doing anything on Sundays, … not doing anything,” Bennett said. “We love to compete. So it has been a test of patience, a test of willpower.”

Now, he is just trying to get comfortable under center as an NFL quarterback again.

“I guess patience,” Bennett said. “Trying to just do the best that I can for me, for the organization, and just taking a step forward every single day.

“You’re not gonna solve all the world’s problems today, and it won’t be tomorrow, and it probably won’t be for a long time. Just keep stacking days, keep getting better.”

After all of the work, Bennett left his coach very impressed following his showing against the Saints

“I thought really Stetson did a really good job in the first half,” Sean McVay said.

If he adds another game like this, Bennett will get his chance to take the next step as an NFL quarterback.
