The Tampa Bay Rays top prospect is ready to make his mark.
On Tuesday, the club assigned Grady Emerson, the 2nd overall selection in the 2026 MLB Draft, to Single-A Charleston to make his professional debut.
The 18-year-old will look to make a splash quickly and find quick time in the minor leagues before making it to Tampa Bay.
Emerson said his goal is to reach the major leagues by the time he's 20 years old, meaning only two seasons inside the minor leagues. Aggressive timeline? Absolutely, but not impossible.
He is currently seen as the 10th prospect in all of baseball. According to MLB Pipeline, "Scouts have a difficult time finding any flaws in Emerson's game, with one noting the worst thing he can say about him is that he's not Bobby Witt Jr. Like Witt, Emerson is a rangy prep shortstop from the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex with all-around tools, even if his aren't quite as loud."
Emerson signed for $9.75 million to join the deep farm system. Although the total is below the slot value of the number 2 pick from this year's Draft, it is still considered the highest bonus ever for a high school player. It is also the 2nd highest player among any ever drafted into MLB.
The Rays certainly put a lot of stock in Emerson, and although he has made his goal of making the majors in two seasons, it doesn't mean he will be rushed. Tampa Bay is known for its world-class development and will certainly make the right evaluations when it's time for him to test the next level.
Since he was drafted during the All-Star break, it has been reported that Emerson was working in Port Charlotte at the team's spring training complex, preparing for his first shot at the minor leagues. He will share the infield in Charlotte with Rays 5th best prospect Cooper Flemming.
Both players could be the future of the infield for Tampa Bay, and fans could have the first taste of it this week in the low minors.
The Charleston RiverDogs are currently hosting the Hill City Growlers, the affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. Emerson is expected to make his debut Wednesday with the team.
