The PGA Tour has officially announced that the RBC Heritage will be included as the ninth regular-season Championship Series event starting in 2028. This decision highlights the tournament's longstanding prestige and significance within the professional golf landscape.
Since its inception in 1969, the RBC Heritage has been held at the renowned Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. The event has earned its reputation as a signature tournament, making it a key fixture on the PGA Tour calendar. With the upcoming changes, it is expected to be part of a select group of 23 to 24 top-tier events, which will also encompass the four major championships, The Players Championship, two post-finale events, and international cup competitions.
Steve Wilmot, the tournament director for the RBC Heritage, expressed his excitement regarding this new status. He stated, "It is an incredible honor for the RBC Heritage to be a part of the PGA Tour Championship Series. This recognition reflects the strength of our tournament and the support of RBC, Boeing, our sponsors, volunteers, and loyal fans." During the recent Tour Championship, PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp mentioned that four additional regular-season Championship Series events have been identified, with active discussions ongoing with 14 potential partners for the remaining four spots. This initiative aims to enhance the competitive landscape of the PGA Tour while maintaining its prestigious reputation.
The RBC Heritage will join an impressive lineup of established events in the Championship Series, including the Truist Championship, Cadillac Championship at Doral, Travelers Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, The Sentry, and The GO by Raymond James (formerly known as the Wyndham Championship). Additionally, a new event sponsored by Japan-based Sompo will also be part of this elite group.
The complete schedule for the 2028 season is set to be unveiled on February 22, which will provide further clarity on the structure and locations of the Championship Series events. Currently, the Genesis Invitational and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am are recognized as signature events, but their inclusion in the Championship Series has yet to be confirmed.
Furthermore, the PGA Tour has expressed its intention to expand its reach into major markets such as Boston, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. This strategic move is aimed at broadening the Tour's appeal and enhancing the overall fan experience.
