The Boston Red Sox are adding reinforcements amid a surge through July and August that has virtually assured them of a postseason berth and put them within striking distance of the American League East lead going into the final month of the 2026 season.
Outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story have been activated from the injured list for Sunday’s matchup with the New York Yankees, the team announced. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated the move would be made after Boston’s 6-0 win on Saturday.
“They’re coming,” Tracy told reporters, via the Boston Globe. “Not sure what we’re doing yet [with the roster]. We’ll figure that out.”
To clear spots on the major-league roster, infielder Anthony Seigler and catcher/designated hitter Mickey Gasper were optioned to Triple-A Worcester.
Anthony, 22, has been on the IL since May 7, initially with a wrist injury but was soon diagnosed with a torn tendon in his right ring finger. Limited to only 30 games this season, he has a slash line of .229/.354/.321 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 5 RBI and 2 stolen bases in 130 plate appearances.
Both Anthony and Story finished up rehab assignments with Worcester on Saturday.
