While the Boston Red Sox lost their most recent game to snap a five-game win streak, they were able to secure the series win, and start a four-game series against their rivals, the New York Yankees, tomorrow.
In that series, Boston should be getting some reinforcements from the IL, with the most likely first name to return being Trevor Story. However, with how bad he’s doing in Triple-A, bringing him back up might be the worst thing for Boston to do right now.

Ever since Story started his rehab assignment in Worcester, he hasn’t been able to hit the broadside of a barn. In 26 at-bats, he’s gotten four hits, all singles, and struck out eight times.
This has made his OPS a .339, making fans seriously concerned, and wanting for him to stick out the full rehab assignment. Story, on the other hand, wants to come up as soon as possible to be available for some point of the Yankees series.

It’s not like the Red Sox desperately need help in the middle infield, either. Mickey Gasper, Anthony Seigler and Nick Sogard have been amazing for the Red Sox in recent times. In fact, their offense this season is much better than what Story was doing before he went down.
However, Story does have an in, and that’s over Andruw Monasterio. Monasterio used to be a hot bat for Boston, but in the past 10 games, he’s cooled off immensely. He’s only hitting .158 in that time, bringing his slashline down to .255/.317/.411/.728.
For reference, before his cold streak, Monasterio had an average above .270 and OPS above .750.

So, when Story eventually is called up, he has a small window to prove himself. If he can shake off whatever is plaguing him in his rehab stint, he could have a place on the team.
However, if he’s unable to return to form, Boston may finally consider cutting the cord with Story, and look for a way to unload him off their roster.
