PITTSBURGH — It was widely assumed Saturday night that the Red Sox were going to be without the services of DH Masataka Yoshida, who injured his left hamstring legging out a double in the third inning.
And sure enough, Yoshida was placed on the IL and replaced by the versatile Mickey Gasper.
But Sunday morning, the Red Sox added to their woes by placing Justin Slaten on the IL, a source confirmed. The move with Slaten was first reported by the Boston Globe.
Slaten has been dealing with elbow soreness. This is his second IL stint of the season; he missed time earlier this year with an oblique strain. He’ll be replaced on the active roster by lefty Raymond Burgos.
The news isn’t all bad for the Sox on Sunday: they’re missing their previously scheduled date with Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes, who was originally scheduled to pitch in the series finale, but was scratched late Saturday night and moved to Wednesday.
Instead, Lake Bachar will get the start for the Pirates. He’ll be opposed by Red Sox lefty Patrick Sandoval.
Also of note: in a somewhat makeshift lineup for the final game of the series, the Red Sox will be without Willson Contreras. He’s getting the day off, with Nick Sogard taking over at first.
Also, Adley Rutschman will DH Sunday, with Connor Wong catching. The Sox are trying to be careful with Rutschman’s workload behind the plate as he comes back from an IL stint due to a left wrist issue.
