MIAMI — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 7-3 win in 11 inningsover the Marlins at LoanDepot Park on Tuesday:
1. Jarren Duran entered his 11th inning at-bat 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He had just two hits in his previous 12 at-bats dating back to Saturday. But with one out and the bases loaded, Duran launched a 412-foot, 105 mph grand slam to right-center field, giving Boston a 7-3 lead. It marked Duran’s second career grand slam. And he did it against a left-handed pitcher.
2. The Red Sox improved to 73-59 overall and 39-27 on the road while the Marlins dropped to 67-66 overall and 41-27 at home.
3. The Red Sox should have won the game in the bottom of the 10th inning. Rookie Wyatt Olds struck out cleanup hitter Javier Sanoja with two outs but the ball got past catcher Connor Wong to the backstop and automatic runner Brian Navarreto scored to tie the game 3-3. It was the second mistake of the inning for Boston.
Olds got Otto Lopez, the first hitter, to ground to shortstop with Navarreto staying at second base. But shortstop Andruw Monasterio made an errant throw to first base, putting two men on base with no outs.
4. Closer Aroldis Chapman did not pitch after having pitched two consecutive days and three times in four days.
5. Mickey Gasper has now reached base in all eight of his plate appearances this series. He homered twice in this game. He is 10 for 21 with five homers, three doubles, 12 RBIs, six runs, six walks and one strikeout since Boston recalled him from Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 16.
His 394-foot blast to center field in the second inning put the Red Sox ahead 1-0. His 418-foot home run to center field in the sixth inning made it 2-1 Boston.
6. Anthony Seigler, Willson Contreras and Connor Wong were involved in a wild play during the seventh inning. The Marlins had one out and runner Jakob Marsee at second base with Otto Lopez at the plate. Lopez hit a 103.2 mph ground ball up the middle that second baseman Anthony Seigler fielded on the shortstop side of the second base bag. Seigler threw off-balance to Contreras. Lopez was called safe at first base, but Contreras alertly fired home to cut down Marsee trying to score.
Red Sox pitcher Tyron Guerrero then escaped without allowing a run when he got Heriberto Hernández to ground out to shortstop to end the inning.
7. Red Sox starter Payton Tolle kept the Marlins hitless until Xavier Edwards led off the fifth inning with a double. Tolle ended up throwing 26 pitches in the fifth. No. 9 hitter Brian Navarreto worked a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game 1-1.
8. Tolle retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced. But he then allowed six of the next nine hitters to reach base. He went 5 ⅓ innings, allowing two runs, four hits and two walks while striking out seven. He allowed a 403-foot solo home run to Heriberto Hernández to lead off the sixth inning, tying the game 2-2.
9. Tolle’s stuff was good. He recorded 17 swings and misses, including 11 with his four-seam fastball that averaged 95.8 mph. He threw 37 four-seamers, 25 sinkers, 19 cutters, 13 curveballs and two changeups.
10. July was Payton Tolle’s worst month this season. He posted a 4.94 ERA in five starts. But he has bounced back well in August with a 2.37 ERA (30 ⅓ innings, eight earned runs) in five starts.
11. Seigler made an alert play to record the first out of the fifth inning. After Xavier Edwards’ leadoff double, Leo Jiménez hit a ground ball to second base. Seigler fielded the ball and fired to third baseman Nick Sogard to cut down Edwards trying to advance.
12. Eli White pinch ran after Seigler walked with one out in the ninth, but White got thrown out trying to steal second base.
13. Left-handed reliever Erik Miller, who Boston acquired from the Giants for shortstop Marcelo Mayer, struck out the side in the ninth inning. He has struck out 18 while allowing just one unearned run in 10 ⅓ innings across 10 appearances.
14. The Red Sox and Marlins will play the final game of their three-game series Wednesday at 6:40 p.m. Right-hander Sonny Gray (16-3, 2.79 ERA) will start for Boston while right-hander Ryan Gusto (0-3, 4.37 ERA) will pitch for Miami.
