Winning 20 games in a Major League Baseball season is not that common nowadays. We've seen it a few times over the past decade or so, but in the modern era, it's unlikely for many reasons.
Boston Red Sox right-hander Sonny Gray has a real opportunity to do so, and not only does he have a chance to do so, but he has a chance to join an elite list.
If Gray continues to throw the same number of innings that he has throughout his starts, at least his average, he'd finish somewhere around the 184.2-innings mark. If he finishes the season with fewer than 200.0 innings and wins 20 games, he'd be just the 10th starter in Major League Baseball history to do so.
Gray recently spoke about reaching that feat and admitted it's been on his mind. He wants to win 20 games and said it's a short-term goal.
“I think at this point, if you just want to be black-and-white with it, yeah, I think getting to 20 wins is doable,” said Gray, per MassLive. “I think if you set short-term goals and long-term goals, if you set your mind to that, I think that would be an accomplishment. So yeah, 20 wins is doable, but I know it doesn’t come without committing and focusing on a daily basis. It’s not going to be given to you.
“So if you just want to call a spade a spade, then yeah, I think 20 wins is a great short-term goal for me to have throughout the end of August and into September. There are also longer-term goals that are obviously more important. But I think that would be something that would be nice to chase.”
Not only does he understand that the Red Sox need to win games to keep playing at this level, but nobody should view it as a problem that he'd also enjoy some personal success.
Gray has had a great year and deserves to make some small history.
