Report: Roman Anthony, Trevor Story set to rejoin the Boston Red Sox

WORCESTER — Reinforcements are coming for the Boston Red Sox.

Just before 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, Roman Anthony and Trevor Story walked out of Polar Park together with their Boston Red Sox duffle bags already packed in the back of a black car that eschewed them out of the Triple-A ballpark.

The two Red Sox players appear to have concluded their rehab assignments and will return to the Red Sox soon.

"I'm excited to get back," Roman Anthony said a few minutes before leaving. "I'm excited to just get back to the normalcy of seeing the guys and being around the boys and for it to be a different environment."

"I feel like I'm ready," said Story after he and Anthony both played in the WooSox' game. "I'm excited."

Roughly two hours before the two Red Sox rehabbers left Polar Park, Anthony and Story both left Triple-A Worcester's game in the seventh inning — a subtle sign that the two were close to wrapping up their individual rehab stints.

Anthony, who has been on the injured list since May 4 due to a torn ligament in the ring finger on his right hand, began a rehab stint with Double-A Portland last week before joining Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday.

Across four games with the WooSox, Anthony hit .286 (4 for 14) with 1 HR and 4 RBIs, and checked off each box in his recovery from a finger injury.

"I'm ready. I feel like I'm ready," Anthony said Saturday. "So, for me, I've felt somewhat ready since the first game in Portland and I think I'm just understanding that with that comes volume and all the different things that go into a rehab assignment and for me it was about getting back out there and, I said it before, getting back into baseball mode, right? You take three months off for an injury and come back and it's like, 'Ooh, OK, like, that feels weird playing baseball again.' But I think after a game or two, you kind of just get back into the swing of things, you play back-to-back days, you're like, 'Alright, this is what it was like.'"

Story, who has been on the injured list since May 15 with a sports hernia, began an injury rehab assignment with the Worcester Red Sox on Aug. 16.

Across 10 games with the WooSox, Story hit .171 (6 for 35) with one double and 3 RBIs. On Saturday, the 33-year-old shortstop collected his first extra-base hit during his rehab stint with Worcester.

"To be able to see a few of those happen is nice," said Story about hitting a few balls in the air in the WooSox' 9-1 loss to the New York Yankees' Triple-A affiliate.

Asked about what it mean to rejoin the Red Sox amid a playoff race, Story added: "It means everything, I think that was kind of the point of having the surgery when we did is if (the Red Sox) fought our way back into (the playoff picture), then there'd be a real chance that I can contribute the way that I know I can. So all that's kind of coming together now and I'm excited about rejoining the club."

While the Red Sox were in the middle of their second game of a doubleheader Saturday in the Bronx (and third game of a series against the Yankees), Anthony and Story left Boston's Triple-A club to reportedly rejoin the Red Sox.

It's been a windy road for both players back to Boston. But reinforcements are finally on the way for the Red Sox.

"I'm excited," Anthony said.

"It's not like we're coming to save the team or anything," Story said. "The boys are playing really well. So, I think that it's good in a way that it takes some pressure off us and we can just go play and fit right in."
