The Rice Owls kicked off their 2026 football season with a commanding performance against Houston Christian, securing a 31-3 victory at Rice Stadium on Saturday. This matchup marked the first meeting between the two teams, with Rice entering as the clear favorite against the Southland Conference's Houston Christian Huskies, an FCS program.
After allowing the Huskies to take an early lead with a field goal, the Owls quickly took control of the game. Rice's offense, primarily focused on the ground game, amassed a staggering 465 rushing yards out of a total of 487 yards, effectively neutralizing Houston Christian’s defense. The Owls' head coach, Scott Abell, made history by becoming the first Rice coach since Fred Goldsmith in 1989 to win his first two season openers.
Houston Christian, coming off a surprising 34-28 win over the nationally ranked Southeastern Louisiana, struggled to keep pace with Rice's relentless rushing attack. Quarterback Cutter Stewart, who had led the Huskies to their previous victory, struggled against Rice's defense, completing just 6 of 17 passes for 61 yards and throwing an interception.
The game was initially delayed by 20 minutes due to lightning, but once it began, Rice quickly established dominance. Despite their offensive struggles in the passing game, the Owls effectively utilized their running backs, with Jackson, Hardeman, and Byars all contributing to the ground assault.
Defensively, Rice was equally impressive, limiting Houston Christian to just 148 rushing yards and forcing turnovers, including an interception returned by Jerrick Harper that set up Rice's fourth touchdown. The Owls' defense was led by a strong performance from their linebackers, who consistently pressured the Huskies' offense.
