The New Orleans Saints can breathe a sigh of relief, but they will still be without one of their veteran playmakers for the immediate future. Running back Alvin Kamara suffered a knee injury during a joint practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Tuesday, and the latest update provides some much-needed clarity for the Saints’ backfield.
According to NewOrleans.Football reporter Nick Underhill on X, Kamara avoided a major knee injury and “didn’t tear anything.” However, Underhill’s source noted that the running back will still be out for a few weeks.
While avoiding a catastrophic tear is a massive win for Kamara and New Orleans, the multi-week timeline means the star veteran is almost certainly sidelined for the remainder of the preseason.

This injury is just another frustrating speed bump for Kamara, who is desperately looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025 campaign. In 11 games last season, the dynamic back struggled to find his rhythm and set career lows across the board. A quick look at the box score shows Kamara managed just 131 carries for 471 rushing yards and a single rushing touchdown. His usually elite impact in the passing game also took a major hit, as he hauled in only 33 receptions for 186 receiving yards and zero scores through the air.
With Kamara focused on rehabbing his knee, the Saints will have to lean heavily on the rest of their depth chart. The front office notably signed former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne in the offseason, and this injury means Etienne will likely dominate the first-team reps as training camp wraps up.
Kamara’s timeline for a return puts his early-season availability in question. If he misses regular-season action, New Orleans will absolutely need Etienne to step up and carry the load. For now, the Saints are simply thankful that Kamara’s scary practice exit wasn’t a season-ending disaster.
