Tuajohn Averite, North Central: The junior running back carried 16 times for 153 yards and two TDs and caught five passes for 41 yards and another score in North Central’s 42-37 victory over Brebeuf Jesuit.
Connor Battle, Speedway: Seven touchdown passes? Not a bad way to start the season. Battle went 13-for-20 through the air for 334 yards and seven touchdowns to four different receivers as the Sparkplugs routed Heritage Christian 47-19.
Sam Behrendt, Pendleton Heights: The junior tight end caught three touchdown passes in Pendleton Heights’ 43-42 overtime win over Lebanon. Behrendt finished with five catches for 56 yards and had a sack and two tackles on defense.
Alec Burress, Indian Creek: The senior safety had eight tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery on defense in Indian Creek’s 52-7 win over Western. Burress also caught one pass for 28 yards on offense.
Cutler Chastain, Bedford North Lawrence: The senior quarterback and Michigan baseball recruit ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns and was 9-for-14 passing for 166 yards in BNL’s 33-27 season-opening win over Martinsville.
Troy Clemmer, Zionsville: The junior strong safety intercepted two passes and had a fumble recovery as Zionsville pulled away for a 24-6 win over Pike in the opener.
Carter Cosgrove, Brebeuf Jesuit: Though it came in a 42-37 loss to North Central, the senior receiver had a monster game with nine catches for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Cosgrove also averaged 19 yards on three kickoff returns.
Dru Ellis, Evansville Memorial: The junior ran for 80 yards and three touchdowns on just four carries and hauled in another TD to finish with three catches for 36 yards. Ellis also had an interception on defense in Memorial’s 48-14 over Jasper.
Ryder Gardner, New Palestine: The senior accounted for 259 all-purpose yards in Class 5A No. 1 New Palestine’s 28-17 win over Wheaton St. Francis, the defending 5A state champion out of Illinois. Gardner had three catches for 126 yards and a TD and returned a kickoff 99 yards for another score.
Dakota Garmon, Tipton: The senior made the most of his five receptions, turning four of them into touchdowns in Tipton’s 48-14 win over Frankton. All of Garmon’s TDs came in the first half as he finished with 159 receiving yards and added three punt returns for 62 yards.
Brooks Haines, Bishop Chatard: The senior receiver caught three touchdown passes in 4A third-ranked Chatard’s 35-7 win over 5A fourth-ranked Lafayette Jeff. Haines had six catches total for 94 yards.
Landon Hall, Penn: The senior quarterback got his season started on a high note, going 15-for-20 passing for 315 yards and six touchdowns in 6A No. 9 Penn’s 49-24 win over Valparaiso.
Andrew Harmon, Franklin Central: The senior linebacker posted 14 tackles, including three tackles for loss, in Franklin Central’s 31-6 win over Plainfield.
Brady Lewis, Brownsburg: The senior running back rushed for 223 yards and three touchdowns on 35 carries in Class 6A top-ranked Brownsburg’s 48-25 season-opening win over fourth-ranked Lawrence North.
Kyson Nicholson, Greenfield-Central: The sophomore carried the ball three times for 77 yards and one touchdown and caught two passes for 40 yards and another score in Greenfield-Central’s 33-27 win over Alexandria. He also returned a kickoff 95 yards for touchdown and punted twice for an average of 45 yards.
Tucker Reed, Warsaw: Reed ran for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries as Warsaw knocked off Class 5A No. 7 Fort Wayne Snider in one of the best games of Week 1.
Harrison Scheele, Fort Wayne Carroll: The senior receiver started his season with a bang as he caught 15 passes for 231 yards and five touchdowns in Class 6A No. 8 Carroll’s 54-23 rout over No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern.
Jack Sorgi, Tri-West: The Wisconsin commit went 14-for-20 passing for 310 yards and four TDs in Class 3A No. 6 Tri-West’s 42-20 win over Western Boone. He also ran for 40 yards and a TD.
Nolan Tarrh, Maconaquah: The senior receiver pulled down 13 receptions for 307 yards (both school records) and one touchdown in Maconaquah’s 42-27 win over Sheridan.
Zechariah Wallace, Warren Central: Wallace hauled in the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:11 left in a 20-14 season-opening win for Warren Central over Center Grove. Wallace made seven receptions for 102 yards for the 5A fifth-ranked Warriors.
