Sedgwick Cricket Club, located south of Kendal, is making strides in its fundraising efforts to establish a full cricket oval on its current grounds. The club recently received a significant boost in their campaign thanks to a generous donation from Sir Humphry Wakefield, a local baronet.

The donation, amounting to £2,000, came about as a result of a unique proposal by the club. Inspired by a historical connection to the area, the club reached out to Sir Humphry after displaying an old letter from him that referenced a notable cricket match played in Sedgwick featuring the legendary cricketer WG Grace.

Club captain Adam Kershaw shared that the correspondence was sparked by a suggestion from a former team captain who had a "curveball idea" to contact Sir Humphry. To their delight, the baronet responded positively, expressing his willingness to assist the club in their endeavors.

In his reply, Sir Humphry not only provided financial support but also humorously requested just two cups of tea per season in return. Kershaw noted, "He took the time to write a lovely letter back and explained he would love to help out if he could. It was much appreciated." This lighthearted agreement highlights the community spirit that surrounds Sedgwick Cricket Club.

The club has a rich history, with its grounds being referred to as "famous grounds" by Sir Humphry himself. The Wakefield family has longstanding ties to the Kendal area, having partially owned Sedgwick House for centuries, which has since been converted into apartments. This connection adds a layer of local pride to the club's fundraising efforts.

As the club continues its fundraising journey, Kershaw expressed optimism, stating they are "not far away now" from reaching their target to purchase the acre of land needed for the cricket oval. The club hopes to celebrate this milestone with Sir Humphry, who is expected to visit soon for a cup of tea.

Sedgwick Cricket Club's initiative not only reflects the importance of community support in local sports but also emphasizes the nostalgia and historical significance of cricket in the region. The club is determined to keep pushing forward with their fundraising goals, ensuring that the legacy of cricket in Sedgwick continues to thrive.
