Seton Hall assistant men’s basketball coach Corey Lowery learned his career fate Wednesday morning.

After a Texas Southern University Board of Regents executive session, Lowery was approved as the new head men’s basketball coach at the HBCU amid a storm of protest from players, students and alumni who wanted interim head coach Shyrone Chatman to get the job. Former Jackson State athletic director Ashley Robinson was also named the school’s new AD.

“Corey Lowery and Ashley Robinson both received approval by the Texas Southern Board of Regents,” per Terrance Harris, who has been covering the ongoing story for defendernetwork.com. “The players [held] signs and alumni members stood during the presentation for Lowery then stormed [out] after the vote.”

Lowery, who grew up in New Jersey and attended Piscataway High School, declined comment to NJ.com via text until the hiring process was complete.

Lowery was initially targeted by Texas Southern president J.W. Crawford to be the new head coach pending board approval earlier this month. Jon Rothstein first reported it on X/Twitter on Aug. 10.

Players, students and alumni protested on campus on Tuesday, saying they wanted Chatman instead of Lowery. Chatman spent the summer recruiting the current roster, and the players appear devoted to him.

Harris posted video to X/Twitter of Texas Southern players, students and alumni “marching on campus in support of the HBCU school retaining” Chatman. The group ended up in the president’s office for a meeting, per Harris.

Chatman took over as the interim in April after Johnny Jones resigned following eight seasons.

Jones, who also coached at LSU, North Texas and Memphis, went 133-125 at Texas Southern, including four straight losing seasons the last four years.

Lowery came to Seton Hall with head coach Shaheen Holloway in 2022.

He has nearly 30 years of coaching experience, including 16 years as a head coach. Prior to Seton Hall, Lowery spent two seasons as head coach at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Under Holloway, Seton Hall won the NIT championship in 2024 and finished fourth in the Big East this past season after being picked last.

With Lowery’s departure, Holloway now has an opening on his staff.
