Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers' two-way star, continues to be a focal point as the team strives for a third consecutive World Series championship. However, his availability for the postseason remains a topic of speculation and concern.

Ohtani's recent progress seemed promising, especially after he completed a 20-pitch bullpen session on August 28. Unfortunately, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts announced on August 29 that Ohtani would not return as quickly as anticipated, leaving fans and analysts alike questioning his role in the upcoming playoff run.

In a press briefing on September 2, Roberts indicated that the team is still weighing the decision to potentially shut down Ohtani for the remainder of the season. "I know he is in lockstep with (Mark Prior), the pitching guys, the training staff, but I think for me he has to throw a bullpen, then we will see the next progression," Roberts explained, emphasizing the cautious approach the team is taking regarding Ohtani's health.

Currently, Ohtani is expected to remain available as a designated hitter, though he has not pitched in a game since July 3 due to ongoing issues with knee inflammation and biceps discomfort. This absence has raised concerns, particularly given that it was his first season with the Dodgers after undergoing extensive rehabilitation following right elbow surgery.

Roberts also addressed the possibility of Ohtani playing in the outfield, stating that this option is "not on the table" at this time, further complicating the situation for the Dodgers as they prepare for the postseason.

Should Ohtani be cleared to pitch, it is likely that he would face restrictions on his pitch count, limiting his appearances to ensure his health is not jeopardized. As of September 2, Ohtani's performance this season has been impressive, boasting a .281 batting average with 30 home runs, 80 RBIs, and 88 runs scored in 128 games. On the mound, he has achieved an 8-2 record with a 3.36 ERA over 14 starts, striking out 95 batters while allowing 55 hits and 21 runs.

The uncertainty surrounding Ohtani's injury status adds an intriguing layer to the Dodgers' postseason strategy as they aim to solidify their roster and maximize their chances for another championship. With the playoffs approaching, the team and its fans will be closely monitoring Ohtani's recovery and potential contributions.
